In Bangladesh, where the potential of youth is immense, the importance of research literacy is increasingly clear. As the nation faces pressing challenges such as climate change, public health crises, and socio-economic disparities, equipping young minds with research skills has become essential. This vision is embodied in the inspiring story of Naziba, a high school student whose life was transformed through her engagement in research.Naziba grew up in a bustling neighborhood in Dhaka, witnessing the struggles of families affected by environmental issues. When she enrolled in a research program organized by the Youth Research Journal, she discovered how her passion could lead to meaningful action.
Leading this transformative movement is Sanaul Haque, a competitive programmer and the driving force behind the Youth Research Journal. Since 2016, Sanaul has been dedicated to fostering skills among young students. His journey began when he was invited to interview at four Ivy League universities. During one of these interviews, he met a candidate whose profile was purely research-based, igniting his curiosity about the research process.
“I was fascinated by the world of research but struggled to find my footing,” Sanaul recalls. “After a year of applying to various programs in the U.S., I realized I needed to create a pathway for students in Bangladesh to learn how to conduct research effectively.” With the support of his family and a commitment to education, he developed a program that has already helped over 172 students learn to write research papers.
Sanaul’s experience underscores the necessity of guidance in navigating the complex landscape of research. “I never set out to be a teacher,” he admits. “But seeing students thrive and express their intellectual curiosity has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Research is a critical skill that fosters inquiry and innovation. A study by the National Science Foundation emphasizes that “early engagement in research activities enhances cognitive skills, fosters critical thinking, and builds confidence.” This is especially important in Bangladesh, where talented students often lack proper guidance to showcase their abilities on a global stage.
This year, Sanaul is organizing the International Academic Research Competition (IARCO) 2024 to ignite the research journey for Bangladeshi students. “I want this country to be a research-backed nation,” he asserts. “We need researchers to support our growth and resilience.” IARCO 2024 offers an opportunity for students to learn from experienced mentors in the field.
The competition features four comprehensive boot camps designed for students of all backgrounds, focusing on crafting impactful research proposals. Esteemed guest speakers, including Mubtaseem Ahnaf Aronnno, an undergraduate research assistant at Dartmouth College, Shubhashish Roy Dipta, a PhD candidate at the University of Maryland, Mahadi Masnad, a PhD candidate at Integrated Nonlinear Photonics at Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and a student at McGill University, will share their insights and experiences to inspire participants.
As we envision a brighter future for Bangladesh, prioritizing research education for our youth is crucial. By supporting initiatives like IARCO 2024, we empower the next generation to tackle the nation’s challenges with confidence and creativity.Naziba’s journey, along with Sanaul’s vision, highlights the transformative power of research. “I have seen the impact of research firsthand, and I believe everyone should have the chance to explore this incredible journey,” Sanaul emphasizes. “This is your opportunity to become a researcher, to protect your intellectual curiosity, and to contribute to our nation’s future.”
Together, let’s inspire our youth to embrace research as a pathway to knowledge and empowerment, ensuring a brighter tomorrow for Bangladesh. Registration for IARCO 2024 is now open till october 22, 2024, inviting students to take the first step toward a transformative experience.
